Kai Memmer, our former partner, currently serves the Western District of Virginia as a magistrate judge.
Kai served on the Virginia Board of Bar Examiners, the National Conference of Bar Examiners Diversity and Inclusion Committee, the Board of the Federal Bar Association — Western District Chapter, the Local Rules Advisory and Bench and Bar Fund Committees for the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia and the Virginia State Bar’s Judicial Screening and Evaluation Committee. Kai previously served as the President of the Virginia Women Attorneys’ Association, the Virginia State Bar’s Faculty on the Education of Lawyers, the Supreme Court of Virginia’s Committee on Lawyer Well-Being, the Virginia State Bar’s Professionalism Course, a board member of the Virginia State Bar’s Diversity Conference, the Virginia State Bar’s Task Force on Diversity, the Virginia Law Foundation Fellow’s Committee and the Boyd-Graves Conference. She routinely volunteers with the Rule of Law program in our schools and pro bono activities to help veterans and other disadvantaged groups. She manages our firm’s “Charitable CLE” series to raise money for local charities while providing low-cost Continuing Legal Education credit to attorneys.
Ms. Memmer was admitted to the Virginia State Bar in 1992 and the North Carolina Bar in 2001. She is admitted in state and federal courts in both states. She is a graduate of Wellesley College and The University of Richmond School of Law. Ms. Memmer has a wide range of experience representing corporate, self-insured, and insurance clients in complex product liability, premises liability, local government, tort, transportation, contract, and insurance coverage matters. She enjoys a state-wide practice and handles and tries cases in all regions of Virginia in both state and federal courts.
In addition to her career, Ms. Memmer enjoys providing pre-litigation advice to clients involving accident investigation, claims handling, and evidence preservation. Ms. Memmer is a frequent lecturer on litigation issues ranging from product to premises liability and on the handling of cases in state and federal courts. She has lectured for many organizations, including but not limited to the Virginia State Bar, Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys, the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, Virginia CLE, the Virginia Women Attorneys Association, The Federal Bar Association and the Virginia State Claims Association. Ms. Memmer is AV Rated by Martindale-Hubbell as prominent in her field of civil litigation.
Ms. Memmer is also an active member in her community. She served as the Table Outreach Coordinator at Central United Methodist Church in Salem. The Table goes out into the community to share God’s grace and serve those in need. Ms. Memmer also volunteers at a number of other charitable organizations and coached a variety of youth sports including soccer, basketball, softball, and tennis. Ms. Memmer has been recognized as an Influential Woman of the Law, a 2018 Virginia Lawyers Weekly Leader in the Law, a 2013 Woman of Achievement in Law (DePaul Community Resources), and received the 2010 Leader in Diversity Award (The Virginia Women Attorneys Association).
