Mark Cathey has been litigating in Virginia State and Federal Courts since 1993, and has tried more than 130 jury trials to verdict for defendants and for plaintiffs. Mark frequently writes and speaks on litigation, liability, insurance and discovery issues for Virginia CLE, the Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys, and other organizations. He is a co-author of Virginia Insurance Law, Virginia CLE, 2001 (first edition), 2009 (second edition) and 2015 (third edition). He was President of the Roanoke Bar Association in 2008-2009, is a fellow of the Roanoke Bar Foundation, and served as a member of the Virginia State Bar Council from 2011-2016.
Mark is AV-Rated by Martindale-Hubbell, a past Master of the Bench of the Ted Dalton Chapter of the American Inn of Court, an Advocate member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, and a fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America. He was awarded the distinction of Virginia Super Lawyer for 2009, 2015 – 2020. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia (1990) and of the Washington and Lee University School of Law (1993).
Mark has served on many local boards and served as a Trustee (Vice Chair 2017-19 and Chair 2019-2020) of the Roanoke City School Board from 2015-2024. While on the School Board he served as Chair of the Roanoke Valley Governor’s School Board (2017-2024) and Chair of the Roanoke City School Board Audit Committee (2021-2024).
